It’s always great to get away – even if it’s just an hour out of town.
Last week a few friends invited me to join them on a day trip to Yellow Springs, Ohio.
If you live in Columbus or Dayton, Yellow Springs is a quick and easy trip, but you still feel like you’re a world away.
Home to Antioch College, Yellow Springs is a tiny town (technically a village), located about an hour west of Columbus and just east of Dayton.
It has a bit of a ‘hippie’ vibe, so there are lots of vegan/vegetarian eateries, restaurants, shops, and art galleries.
For lunch, we stopped at Ye Olde Trail Tavern, which is full of history. It was one of the first buildings in the town and some even say that it’s haunted. It’s a very casual bar/grill with sandwiches, burgers, and soups available. I had a pesto grilled cheese, which was quite yummy!
In the afternoon, we stopped at Dino’s Cappuccino’s for some cold coffee. They have about 20-30 drinks that come hot, iced, or frozen. I ended up with an iced chai/espresso. It was a tiny place, but it definitely seemed like a local favorite.
One of my favorite shops that we browsed was Kismet. It was full of feminine, bohemian clothing and accessories. They had lots of unique, stylish pieces that I haven’t even seen in Columbus.
We also took some time for nature and visited Glen Helen Nature Reserve. There were lots of waterfalls – big and small. Summer was a great time to visit because everything was so green! I would also imagine it’s quite stunning in the fall as the leaves are changing.
If you’ve never been to Yellow Springs (or even if you have), I’d certainly suggest the quick trip from Columbus.
