Barre in Columbus

I’ve never been one to enjoy “working out” in the literal sense. I’ve never had a gym membership and always found running the mile to be a bit of a drag. I love being active outside by hiking or walking long distances – like when I lived in major cities. However, with the cold weather and living in suburbia, I’m not able to be outside as much as I would like – especially in the winter (hello 13 degrees!).

When I came back to Columbus, I started taking yoga classes and got into a good yoga routine. I really enjoy a great, warm Ashtanga class – especially in the winter! I found some studios that I really loved and classes that were challenging to me, but didn’t seem impossible. So when Studio B approached me to try out their Barre studio, I was a little bit hesitant. I had just discovered a fantastic new yoga studio in my neighborhood and was just getting into a good routine with them. I also didn’t really know what barre was and I wasn’t sure if I would like it.

Since I knew some people there, I decided to give it a try and see how I felt after a month. Turns out, I LOVED it!

In a few words, Studio B Barre classes focus on small movements on a mat at the ballet barre set to music. For a more thorough description about barre classes, be sure to check out this article from Fitness Magazine.

The Location

Studio B is located in an area of Columbus called German Village. The studio is a couple blocks from 3rd Street – which is the main street that runs through German Village. It’s inside what looks like a small house and is surrounded by other residences and small businesses. You enter the studio from the side door off of the patio. I love their location in German Village because it’s convenient to downtown and many other parts of Columbus – it’s very to get on and off of the freeway and go straight to the Studio. I also love that it’s not located right on the main street, so it’s fairly easy to find street parking. They do not have a parking lot, so you’ll want to allow yourself a few extra minutes to park and arrive to class 10 minutes early.

The Classes

I had a monthly unlimited pass and with my pass, I was able to go at various times and try out some different teachers. I really feel like the month pass is the way to go. You can freely tryout a variety of class and the monthly pass is typically discounted to new students.

The class that you attend is based on your ability and availability. I always did the “Barre in the Village” classes.  All of those classes follow a similar format in terms of the exercises done. However, each teacher may change it slightly. That being said, even if you go to the same teacher week after week or 2 classes within the same week, no 2 classes are the same. Music is also a central part of the class – there is always something fun and upbeat playing in the background. The class format also changes every month – to focus on different parts of your body. You can read more about all of the classes that they offer here.

One thing to keep in mind is that the classes are popular, so it works differently than some other places. There are a limited number of spots, so it’s in your best interest to sign up for the next month in advance. You can always cancel (up to 4 hours ahead of time), but if you don’t sign-up, you may experience difficulty getting a spot. I had no problem getting my classes, as I did sign-up all at once.

Another thing to note is that they offer the option for childcare for a minimal fee for a few of their classes.

What to Wear

For a barre class, you’ll want to wear something comfortable – like what you wear in yoga. I’m in love with this tank and these pants. You also may occasionally use socks, but they’ll have some for you.

What Makes it Special

As I mentioned, I had already found a few places that I enjoyed and so I wasn’t really looking to add yet another workout studio to what I was already doing. (Although they are part of Classpass, so if you aren’t planning to go more than 3x/month, Classpass might be a good choice). However, Studio B has something different – something special.

One of my favorite things about Studio B was the fact that you don’t have to bring anything to class. They supply the mats, the weights, and any other accessories you may need during the class. They also offer water and cups. I loved that they make a special infused water for each class – sometimes it was lemon water, grapefruit water, or even strawberry water. They also offer some tiny snacks by the water such as figs or almonds.

It’s hard to explain what makes Studio B feel special. Yes, everyone is very friendly and welcoming, but it’s more than that. It was a warm and inviting place to exercise – like you’re hanging out with your girlfriends, in your friend’s living room, listening to fun music and getting a killer workout.

You really should go and see for yourself – Maybe I’ll even see you there?!
