Last month I was invited to check out Under the Palm Spray Tan in Gahanna with a couple other bloggers. I have to admit it had been quite some time since I had last done a spray tan and I was a bit nervous. I was excited about the prospect of having a bit of a glow, but I wasn’t too excited about the experience I remembered from my last spray tan. However, the experience with Under the Palm Spray Tan was entirely different – it was excellent.
The Process
Under the Palm Spray Tan offers quite a few options for your tan. You will first decide between doing a spray tan booth and doing a custom spray tan. With the custom spray tan, they offer many options in terms of the type of glow you will receive. With names like The Malibu, The Maui, and The Cabo – it makes you wish you could try them all! I did The Rio, which is described as “goes on warm with a combination of a deep brown and reddish brown tint giving you the most exotic tan with a tropical coconut lime fragrance.”
If you do a custom spray tan, it means you will have someone apply the tan to you using a spray machine. They have two rooms available for this service. To start, you will go into your room and get undressed/dressed for the spray tan. You will want to wear either a black bikini or black undergarments. They also offer disposable options as well as something to cover you hair and special lotion.
To get ready, you will want to apply the lotion to your nails, hands, and feet. Once you’re ready, someone will come into the room to apply your tan. She used a machine the looked a lot like a steamer. Then she carefully sprayed the solution all over my body. The best part was the warm spray that came out. I remember when I did it in the booth before, it was freezing and a bit of an unpleasant experience because it sprayed out so forcefully. It’s great to have a person apply the solution because she can see which areas may need more coverage and she is able to direct you on how to stand.

Following the tan, they recommend that you wait 6-8 hours before showering. Since I did it in the evening and I wanted to shower before bed, I didn’t wait that long. For that reason, it wasn’t as dark as it might have been if I had waited, but it was still a great shade. For me, it lasted about a week. It looked natural and was just a great warm glow, which was just what I wanted. I didn’t want to look like I had just done a spray tan. Another great thing was that the solution they use is water soluble, so you don’t have to worry about it staining your clothing or your bedding. I would still recommend wearing dark, loose clothing to your appointment, but they also offer a great waiting area. They have some cozy robes and flip flops that you can change into while you sit in the waiting area and wait for your tan to dry.
