New in Columbus: Joseph Editions

As Columbus grows and changes, so does the culture – and the Short North is a prime example of how Columbus has changed for the better over the past 10 years.

Opening soon in the Short North is the Joseph Editions –  the latest project from real estate developer and world-renowned art collector, Ron Pizzuti. Pizzuti is known in Columbus most recently for his hip, stylish hotel in the Short North – The Joseph as well as the Pizzuti Collection, a nonprofit organization of contemporary art showcasing the Pizzuti family’s collection of art. (I had a wonderful time visiting the Pizzuti Collection this past summer, which I’ll save for another post).

The purpose of the Joseph Editions is to help a wider audience become collectors. They challenge the notion that not everyone can go out and purchase original pieces of artwork directly from an artist. In their own words, they state,

“As a fine arts publisher, Joseph Editions realizes the vision that anyone can be a collector, and that original, high quality art can be approachable and accessible.”

Last Wednesday night, they hosted a Launch Party at the Joseph Hotel featuring work from 15 contemporary artists with links to Ohio. There were 31 pieces and each artist was responsible for pricing their own work. Each artist was assigned the task of creating a unique piece art that would be created into a print. They worked with Forth Estate in New York on the same printing press as Andy Warhol to create their work. For many of the artists who had worked primarily in paint in the past, creating a print was a new experience. They felt is would a fun challenge to translate the details of the work into the prints. However, all of the artists were impressed by the detail that they were able to convey with the powerful technology of the silkscreen press they used.

During the artist talk that evening, we heard from Denny Griffith, Mary Jo Bole, Tony Mendoza, and Sarah Fairchild.

All artwork was for sale that evening with a limited inventory and the thought that as inventory decreases, prices would increase. The Joseph Editions will be open soon on Russell Street – just off of High St. In the meantime,  you can click here to purchase the available work online.
