So let’s cut to the chase –  today is a big day because I’m launching a shop!!

I know… you may be thinking that this came out of nowhere, but the truth is that this idea has been years in the making.

In college I studied art and business. I think it’s much more common now with how social media and the internet has changed our world, but when I started looking at colleges while in high school, people often wondered why I would want to study both art and business. The reason was that I believed art could be profitable, sustainable, and a way to make a living. I didn’t want to be a “starving artist” and I didn’t believe that others should have to be either. There’s a huge demand for handmade goods and with things like Ebay and Etsy, it’s easier than ever to connect those makers with the buyers.

My first trip abroad was in college. I went to Turkey and my favorite part was going in all of the shops and studios. I loved seeing how people made the exquisite textiles and pottery pieces – chatting with them about their process and touching the materials brought the pieces to life. I later went to Greece and the Czech Republic and in each place, I did the same thing. Just like food, artisanal goods tell the story of a culture.

The pieces in today’s post are actually from Mexico. Since we have family in Mexico, we figured that it would be the easiest place to start. Each piece is made by hand by a person (typically a woman) in a village in Chiapas. Famous worldwide for its’ textiles, Chiapas borders Guatemala as well as the Mexican state of Oaxaca. With a very different lifestyle, economy, and a lack of financial opportunities, artisanal goods are a way for women to support and feed their families.

I look forward to growing the offerings to include other items, other parts of Mexico, and eventually, other parts of the world.

To shop the pieces, you can click here to go the shop homepage or click on any of the photos in post to see a specific item. I can’t wait to hear what you think!
